The Covid-19 Pandemic has caused unprecedented uncertainty across the world

Owens Group have recently acquired additional vehicles to continue supporting the Home & Express Delivery network, to aid the expansion of our team of key-workers, and to ensure our customers can rely on their essential items being safely and promptly delivered during these difficult times.

The Group are delighted to have been commended by both Palletforce and Motor Transport Magazine this week, praising our efforts in a project alongside Welsh Government and NHS Wales in delivering PPE and life saving equipment across Wales, Scotland, England and Ireland during the Covid19 pandemic.

Statement issued by Palletforce read:

'Palletforce member Owens Group has been involved in a mammoth effort to distribute personal protective equipment (PPE) to NHS stores across Wales and other areas of the UK, ensuring frontline NHS staff have adequate stocks available and are fully protected at all times.

The South Wales network member has also distributed hospital beds to emergency field hospitals across West Wales, ensuring both temporary Nightingale and permanent hospitals are equipped to deal with COVID-19 cases.

The award-winning family business has been tasked with distributing multiple truck-loads of essential pieces of PPE to NHS Wales and also to NHS departments in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Owens Group trucks met flights, specially-chartered by the Welsh Government, carrying critical PPE from Asia to Cardiff. The freight was unloaded with staff from Owens collaborating on the ground with NHS Wales, Cardiff Wales Airport, South Wales Police, Swissport handling and Military Aid.

Further truck-loads of PPE were collected from Heathrow with Owens undertaking the onward distribution to the NHS.

Huw Owen, Owens Group managing director, said: This has been one of the most important challenges in the history of our company and we are all honoured to be playing such an important role in supporting NHS Wales and other NHS departments across the UK. It was a project where our robust family values and focus on service delivery meant everyone rose to the challenge.

Michael Conroy, Palletforce chief executive, said: We are privileged and proud to have a community spirited and inspirational company like Owens Group as a key Palletforce member. Everyone in the business has come together to deliver this critical project and gone the extra mile to ensure essential PPE is reaching frontline staff and the emergency Nightingale hospitals in their region are properly equipped.

Palletforce members have been instrumental in delivering supplies to critical NHS projects across the UK and it has been heart-warming to see the huge efforts that our members are going to. '

The article can also be found in the Motor Transport magazine, both in print and online.

Thank you for recognising the hard work and dedication to the cause that our teams have embraced with passion and enthusiasm - delivering life saving equipment across the four nations at this critical time.

Owens Group are proud to be supporting Welsh Government and NHS Wales though the distribution of critical PPE, arriving from Cambodia and China to the Front Line across Wales, Ireland, Scotland and England.

Working closely on the ground with teams from NHS Wales, Genmed, Cardiff International Airport, South Wales Police, Military Aid, Swissport Handling, JAG-UFS, Air Partners, Border Force & Raven Express, The Group are thrilled to have been able to offer our expertise and equipment in this vast logistical effort.

Ensuring maintaining supply chain stock of personal protective equipment, the project has already distributed 70 million pieces of PPE to front-line health and care staff, and 660,000 fluid resistant gowns.

Making a great difference to our NHS in the valiant battle against Covid19.

The transport sector accounts for a significant proportion of emissions that have adverse effects on our climate and environment.

There are 10 prominent reasons why the Group chose to trail these vehicles within our rapidly growing fleet:
1: Improve carbon footprint
2: Reduce NOx and particulate mass emissions
3: Reduce noise pollution
4: Reduce fuel costs
5: Reduce total cost of ownership
6: Easy maintenance and expert repairs
7: Improve brand image and corporate sustainability
8: Safer fuelling, nontoxic and non-corrosive therefore safer for the environment
9: Ensures a competitive advantage in a highly competitive industry
10: Ensures growth in the UK economy in terms of reducing both our dependence on imported fossil fuels, and less scope of huge fluctuations in prices due to global politics

Our aim is to make progress toward areas of energy efficiency and alternative fuels, whilst also keeping a keen eye on reducing overall fuel costs incurred by the Group on an annual basis.

We all have a duty to improve our fuel efficiencies and minimise environmental impact lets make today the day we start making that change.

Just some days ago, whilst out on the road, one of our contractors Anthony Phillips came across an elderly gentleman on the ground having a seizure.

Anthony pulled over and rushed to give assistance. The gentleman was in and out of consciousness and having multiple fits. He supported the gentlemans head and called for an ambulance.

Anthony wrapped the gentleman in a safety blanket from the first aid kit in his van and waited for the ambulance.

When the ambulance staff arrived he gave a timeline of what had happened and then continued with his route.

Anthony is a credit to Owens Group! We are proud to have him work with us.

Friday 22nd February 2019 was a night to remember where we attended the Swansea Bay Business Awards 2019, where the best businesses and entrepreneurs across the Swansea Bay city region were revealed!

We were thrilled and extremely proud to hear the Lifetime Achievement Award was made to our MD Huw Owen for his outstanding contribution to business and the regional economy, as well as his huge contribution to charities and good causes.

The audience learned how he set up the business with just one lorry in 1970, before being joined by his brother Eurof, who is the firms commercial director.

Now our family-run business is firmly established as one of the UKs leading players in the UK transport and warehousing sector with a workforce of over 1000 heads & 550 trucks and vans. Last year we acquired Manchester-based BTS Haulage.

As a group, we now have a turnover in excess of 100million

Thank you to Swansea Bay Business Club, the event sponsors, the judges and to the Brangwyn Hall for another successful event - we at Owens Group had a fantastic time.

Ian Owen, Operations Director and second generation of the family business joins Huw Edwards, Chief Financial Officer, to discuss how their purpose has helped them navigate the challenges of leading a rapidly growing business. Click here to learn more.

Owens Group actively strive to help causes in our community on a daily basis.
Feedback and messages of thanks help us realise that these gifts of donations, be it small or large really do make a marked difference to Charities that work relentlessly day in day out to make changes to those in need.

This week alone we have seen correspondence from Shelter Cymru and Save the Children thanking us for monetary donations to help fight homelessness and families that are facing difficult times.

Most notably was a kind card from our partner Charity Follow your Dreams where we provided them with transport, moving stock donated by Aldi to their HQ for sorting, allowing them to raise an incredible 36,733.21 for the Charity!

Whilst we cannot help all causes, we really hope that what we offer makes a small difference in assisting worthwhile causes to make a change to precious lives.

Owens Group were amongst 90 businesses this week, calling for a decision to be made by the Welsh Government to press ahead with the much discussed 1.4bn M4 relief road around Newport

Ian Jarman of Owens Group told the BBC that a decision needed to be made for the good of road users and the freight industry.

He said: The Welsh Government have dragged their feet for a long time on this.
I believe they are stalling for time and don't want to build the relief road, they are looking for reasons not to build the relief road.

The decision has to be made, this is holding back the Welsh economy.
The Welsh Government have previously said that officials are analysing a report from a public inquiry into the planned relief road & a decision will be made when the advice has been prepared.

On January 31st Secretary of State for Wales, Alun Cairns, said: Businesses representing over 300,000 jobs are calling for this road to be built. When so many companies come together it highlights what a priority this is for the Welsh economy. With this in mind, the M4 relief road needs to be built as quickly as possible.

As the Secretary of State for Wales I have made sure that the money has been made available by the UK Government to build the M4 Relief Road. If this road is not built now, it will not be built until at least 2031.

This is because we would have to wait five years or more for a new First Minister, there would need to be a new inquiry that could last up to two years, and even if the decision was made then and the money happened to be available it would be a five-year build programme

If the M4 relief road is not built now, it will not be built until 2031 and the Welsh economy cannot cope with that challenge.

It remains to be seen how this will press ahead.

What we know for certain is that the road infrastructure around Newport is choked with idle traffic that is having an adverse effect on the Welsh economy, affecting our appeal from outside investment.

What a night it was for us at Owens Group on Friday January 18th!

Held at the prestigious Stradey Park Hotel in Llanelli, we attended the West Wales Business Awards where the Group had been nominated in the Services category.

With plenty of excellent West Wales businesses on the short list, it was an anxious wait, but we were thrilled to be announced as the winners of the Services category yet again this year, presented by Carmarthen Journal & Llanelli Star and Evening Post editor Jonathan Roberts.

The pinnacle of the night however was yet to come, on being awarded the Overall Winners of West Wales Business of the Year 2019!

Presented to us by the Main Sponsors of the evening, University of Wales Trinity Saint David, The Venerable Randolph Thomas, Chair of Council at Swansea Business School & Carmarthen Business School hands to Ian Owen our accolade.

This award is true testimony to our teams who work re entlessly in making us the best in our business, and such an honor to be recognised as such in our HQ town!

Well done to all who were nominated - truly a great evening showcasing Welsh businesses at their best.

2018 has been a great year for us at Owens Group, seeing our expanding business grow from strength to strength thanks to our wonderful customer base and incredible teams.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your business and contribution to a successful year, and to our followers for your fantastic support.

We wish you all a wonderful 2019.

Monday 17th December 2018 was a historic day when Owens Group Driver, Craig Evans, made history in being selected to be the first member of the public to cross the Prince of Wales Bridge (Severn Bridges) and not pay a toll, when the bridge, which links South Wales with England, became toll free for the first time since it opened back in 1966.

Owens Group have tirelessly campaigned for the toll to be removed for over 8 years, directly at Westminster with MPs and through our proactive trade associations, the FTA and RHA.

The toll ended at a fee of 16.70 per HGV making a crossing back into Wales.

As a company, we make a staggering 31,000 crossings back into Wales using both bridges per year.

The savings are of course substantial to us as a company and will allow us to invest further in new greener technology.

The removal of the tolls will allow the Welsh economy to grow by over 100million pound per year, therefore as Welsh premier logistics provider, this can only have a positive outcome for us as a business.

We do however recognise that there will be some negative effects with the removal of the tolls.

The major concern is that the toll booths will no longer exist and act as a man made filter to hold back and slow the traffic on approach to the traffic 'hotspot' on the M4 around Newport.

Yesterday, we were able to highlight these concerns with the Secretary of State for Wales Mr Alun Cairns who confirmed that money has been made available from the Government in Westminster, and released to the Welsh Government for the building of the M4 relief road around Newport.

We are now calling on the new First Minister for Wales Mr Mark Drakeford, his Transport Secretary Ken Skates, and his Deputy Transport Minister Lee Waters of the Welsh Government to be bold and deliver a major piece of infrastructure that is so badly needed.

To use Craigs words an iconic moment

Thank you to Highways England staff for allowing us to be part of this momentous day. A day that history was made!

Owens Group are pleased to announce the purchase of 40 new DAF XF tractor units, following the Groups recent 100 million turnover milestone, we were looking to expand the fleet, as well as replacing a batch of outgoing models.

Operations Manager Emyr Owen explains Having tested a demonstrator earlier in the year, we were very impressed with the build quality and impressive fuel return, further to this, driver attraction and retention is key within the transport industry and the new trucks have been massively well received within.
Having worked with DAF in the past we are very comfortable that we will continue to build on our existing relationship, given the value of customer care received thus far

With depots across South Wales, Wrexham, The Midlands and the recent acquisition of Manchester based BTS Haulage Ltd, the Group now operate 550+ trucks and vans, 800 trailers and 1million sq. ft of warehousing across the UK.

On Sunday 11 November we commemorated the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women involved in the two World Wars and later conflicts.

This week is National Lorry Week! Who doesn't #lovethelorry right?

With 89% of all food and agricultural products in the UK being transported by road, without the humble lorry the shop shelves would almost certainly be empty!

There are 2.54 million people currently working in the haulage and logistics industry, with a staggering (estimated) 124 billion annual contribution to the UK economy.

The primary aim of the National Lorry Week is to raise awareness of the fantastic job our lorry drivers are carrying out day in - day out and importantly also, to urge prospective drivers to consider HGV driving as a career that has an increasing appeal within the UK.

Government statistics show that by 2022, the industry needs to employ some 1.2 million individuals from drivers to warehouse operatives, to management, workshop technicians - the list is endless!

With depots placed as far as West Wales, across to the Midlands and North to Manchester, Owens Group have plenty of exciting opportunities for you. Contact our recruitment team today on 01554 754465!

Scarlets motor on with Owens

Owens Group, the UKs leading transport and warehousing company, has signed a lucrative deal with the Scarlets ahead of the 2018-19 season.

The national company, with their headquarters in Llanelli, has been long-standing supporters of the region and the new partnership will see the company logo feature on the left shoulder of both home and away kits.

Since its creation in 1972, by brothers Huw and Eurof Owen, the company has continued to go from strength to strength and now employs over 850 people nationwide, operates over 1,000 vehicles and has a turnover of £60 million.

Officially welcoming Owens Group Nathan Brew, Scarlets Head of Commercial, said; We are delighted to welcome Huw Owen and David Owen and the entire Owens Group to the Scarlets family.

Owens is an integral part of the local community here in Llanelli and West Wales, they have been supporters of community rugby for many years and I believe that we share a similar outlook in terms of supporting our wider communities.

We are extremely proud to be associated with the Owens name and look forward to a successful working partnership with them over the coming seasons.

Owens Group is passionate about working and living in their local communities; with depots spread across the UK there is an ethos within Owens Group to give back to their communities.

As well as supporting local organisations, charities, local schools, colleges and sporting organisations the company has recently invested in new box trailers, wrapped with the Follow Your Dreams livery, which feature former Scarlets, Wales and British & Irish Lion Mike Phillips. The deal effective from Tuesday 17 July, will see BTS Haulage continue to operate as a standalone brand within the Llanelli-headquartered Owens Group. In a statement Owens said the purchase of the Carrington-located haulier would complement the company's strategic objective to increase its presence and activities in its key geographical markets.

BTS Haulage was set up in 1957 by Neil Gilson and Neil's son, Crispin joined the business in 1980 and became MD in 1990. We were thrilled to have been in attendance of the 32nd Motor Transport Awards at the London Grosvenor Hotel last week, where we were shortlisted out of some 200 companies for the Safety In Operations Award.

Unfortunately it wasn't our night, but the nomination is testament to the relentless work that our teams execute day in day out - ensuring safety is of paramount importance to us and something that we will not compromise on.

A great night of catching up with some familiar faces, allowing the team to let their hair down!

Motor Transport Awards 2019 - we will be back!

Yesterday saw Jess Price, our HR Officer, take the plunge where she took part in a SKY DIVE to help fund raise for the worthy charity 'Follow Your Dreams'

Follow Your Dreams is a national charity operating in Wales & England, that inspires children and young people with learning disabilities to follow their dreams

We have had a close connection with the charity for some time, where we invested in new box trailers, wrapping them with the Follow Your Dreams livery with a view to spread the Follow Your Dreams name across the UK

This is an organisation close to our hearts, so we were thrilled to participate in their charity Sky Dive

Over 2000 was raised via our Just Giving page, with donations still being made!

A huge well done to Jess - we are all very proud of you

Last week saw Parc Y Scarlets host the West Wales Community Awards (2018) where Owens Group were present as event sponsors.

The event helps showcase and thank those individuals in our community who go that extra mile for no reward.

It is always a humbling experience to hear of acts of true courage, people who give their time to help other wholly, complete dedication to matters, and commitment to trying to make a change.

Ian Owen presented the award for Sporting Excellence - awarded to Scarlets & Wales Rugby Union player Jonathan Davies .

Today, we welcomed Welsh Politician and the leader of Plaid Cymru - Leanne Wood to our HQ.

Leanne was eager to learn what challenges we face as a haulage company, with the majority of our trucks and business based in South Wales.

Huw and Eurof Owen spoke at length about the tough current economic climate, coupled with the effect of the weak Pound in an already weak economy; How do fluctuating and more importantly rising fuel prices affect us as a company, and how do we thus remain competitive whilst maintaining our standards in an extremely competitive and volitile market?

Topical today too is the shortage of HGV drivers in the UK. How can we encourage today's young people into the world of transport?

Leanne was encouraged by our plans for a recruitment drive this summer, where we invite all prospective HGV drivers to come and meet the team, learn about Owens Group and decide for themselves if their future lies with us!

Thank you for visiting us today, our door is always open.

As part of our commitment to continued expansion and service to new and existing contracts, Owens Group have invested in a fleet of new rigid vehicles.

This investment allows us to broaden our service availability to customers with more specific transport needs whist also supporting existing customers further organic growth.

All now in fleet and already hitting the roads of the UK!

Thank you to the Scarlets for their warm welcome at their annual Player Sponsor's luncheon, held at the Stradey Park Hotel, Llanelli at the end of last month

David Owen was present, who thankfully accepted Leigh Halfpenny's signed jersey for the given season as a gesture of thanks for our sponsorship

We look forward to offering our continued support in 2018/2019

Last week, Owens Group welcomed the BBC News to our HQ in Llanelli, South Wales, where economic editor, Kamal Ahmed, reported about the the UK economy's weakest growth since 2012

The economy grew at its slowest rate since 2012 in the first quarter of the year, the Office for National Statistics has said

GDP growth was 0.1% down from 0.4% in the previous quarter

Although the ONS said the extreme weather had had a 'relatively small' impact on the fall in growth, we at Owens Group felt its full force, which cost the business 250,000 during that period where we saw the 'Beast from the East' coupled with 'Storm Emma' bring the country to a virtual halt

Operations Director Ian Owen spoke frankly about these costly effects on the business - costs that will not be recouped very easily

We look positively however to the remainder of 2018

Owens Group are thrilled to have been shortlisted for The Motor Transport Award for Safety In Operation (2018)
This prestigious event, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London later this year will host the best in the business.

We always emphasise that safety is of paramount importance to us - we will not tolerate anything less
A huge well done to all who have invested in this - an honor to be nominated in itself
Good luck to all you nominees - we will see you in July!

Owens v The Beast from the East & Storm Emma

We have been in the news... all over the world
Friday 2nd March saw the country come to a virtual halt as the UK was hit with the worst storm that we have seen for some 50 years
One of our trucks unfortunately found himself stuck in snow and ice at Magor services, near Newport, South Wales. Luckily for him, the Royal Marines were on hand to save the day
A squad helped shunt the back end of the trailer until it built enough traction to move freely back on to the road
The staggering incident was captured by a member of the public on a video phone which was kindly sent to us at HQ to view
The video was rapidly shared through the many mediums of social media & was viral before the end of the night
We have had many requests for permission to share the footage.
It was shown on the BBC & SKY new channels, was shared via the Daily Mail, Daily Star, many local newspapers here to us in South Wales and also an ABC news correspondent in the States spoke of it
We also saw Bear Grylls retweet it an the footage being shown on the UniLad & Ladbible social pages to name but a few
We are now up to 5.7 million views on Facebook alone, with 81.8K shares & 47.3K likes
Group Operations Manager Emyr Owen said: The Beast from the East, couples with Storm Emma, have definitely put us at Owens Group to the test. Our drivers have encountered some drastic weather conditions over the last few days. They have remained extremely professional throughout but some did find themselves in some particularly snowy situations
This video is testament to the massive respect our armed forces deserve. Its times like these people do come together and support eachother as one
Without the Royal Marines at Magor Services yesterday, this driver would have faced many more hours stranded. They did an awesome job in getting us back moving
We would like to thank everyone involved in getting us back on wheels, allowing us to help keep the shelves stocked

It has been another busy weekend of celebrating success this time at a more local level where we attended the annual Actif Carmarthenshire Sports Awards at Theatre y Ffwrnes Llanelli.

These awards help us recognise the sporting achievements and successes of individuals, sports clubs and school teams, and also allow us to acknowledge the contribution made by dedicated coaches and volunteers without whom many organisations just would not be able to exist.

Some of those nominated for Fridays awards represent their sport on a local, national or even international level. It was a joy to recognise and celebrate their commitment and hard work and the positive impact that their sport gives to the community.

Owens Group were proud main sponsors of the night, and were immensely happy to have been sponsoring the last award of the evening that of Carmarthenshire Sports Personality 2017 awarded to Jonathan Davies International and Scarlets Rugby player.

Another joyous evening amongst true local talent - well done to all those nominated!

Proud winners of the West Wales Business Award for Services 2018 - awarded at Llanelli's Stradey Park Hotel on Friday 19th January.
A true testimony to the hard work executed by our teams day in day out.
Well done all!

You may have seen or heard plenty of us of late!

Our compliance, safety and training manager Mike Colborne made an appearance on BBCs XRAY with Omar Handi on Thursday 16th October where they discussed the increase in crash for cash scams that costs the insurance industry some 300m every year & Owens Groups commitment to protecting our property & drivers with fitting out all 300 of our vehicles with camera & recording equipment. Watch the clip here http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0991htt

We were also proud to have played a small part in helping move materials in Swansea for the fabulous DIY SOS programme (Children in Need special) due to be aired mid-November. The team alongside the Root Foundation, Swansea and BBCs Children in Need really do produce miracles. Look out for a clip of our trucks when the show is aired!

Lastly, we welcomed Phill Hoyles and his team from Swansea Sound to our HQ in Dafen last Friday! What fun we all had! The show was aired live from our site, including inside a truck! Listeners got to hear about or recruitment drive, where we are eager for anyone to get in touch if they think they have something to offer our team be it van drivers, class 1 & 2 drivers, warehouse operatives, office staff, technical and maintenance staff the list is endless and not just for Christmas might we add!
Keep an eye on our website for updated vacancies!

September was quite a month for us at Owens Group!
Not only were we honored with the Safety Award @ the Logistics Awards, we also made the Media Wales Top 100 Companies in South West Wales (in partnership with Barclays and PwC) listings!
Owens Group sit proudly in 16th position, just short of huge leaders such as Admiral, Sinclair Motor Holdings & Swansea City Football Club to name but a few.
Media Wales wrote 'Owens Road Services is well known throughout the area, employing more than 500 people. The company is a true local success story starting with one van in 1970 it grew to employ more than 100 people by 1990 and began accepting European work in 1992. In 2008 Owens opened its first English depot in Worcestershire, followed by the acquisition of the former Panasonic site in Baglan in 2010'
