UKRAINE CRISIS
First and foremost, our thoughts and hearts are with those who, through no fault of their own, are facing an uncertain future and are victims of horrendous atrocities.
It is our nature as human beings to want to do all we possibly can to help.
But despite how much we want to help, we have to be mindful that we neither have the resources or ability to assist these victims at this present time.
There have been some social media posts shared this week that are factually incorrect.
Owens Group are not acting as collection points for donations of aid & we are not providing transport to Eastern Europe.
Whilst we will always endeavour to do all we can to help, we cannot take in donations whilst organisations and those collecting aid physically cannot accept any more.
We kindly ask that individuals do not arrive at our depots with donations; unfortunately we are unable to accept these.
As the situation rapidly develops, the consensus of advice is to make monetary donations via the British Red Cross to its DEC Ukraine appeal.
Thank you.

CELTIC COURIERS TRIAL FIRST ELECTRIC VAN
The days of the question when purchasing a new vehicle petrol or diesel is rapidly shifting as environmental concerns drive change in the world of logistics.
As an industry we recognise our need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and our preparation for climate change impacts will generate environmental, social, economic and health benefits for all communities we serve.
With this in mind, our sister company Celtic Couriers have taken into fleet one Maxus Delivery 9 to trial in service for a duration of one week for feasibility purposes.
The brand-new electric van will serve the SA postcode and see it make on average 60-80 deliveries per day.
The vans have a range of 130 miles, and through trialling we can see how many we could accommodate within our fleet.
Some benefits we can expect to see versus a regular diesel van are:-
Lower running costs
Cheaper to maintain
Environmentally friendly
Future proofing
Easy to drive
Should the trial prove to be successful, we can expect to see their introduction into full time service from (lead time allowing) late Summer 2022.
Thank you to BP Rolls Group for their knowledge and expertise and allowing Celtic this opportunity in their search for the most appropriate EV as they continue to be the nationwide parcel delivery experts.

CONGRATULATIONS JAMES!
Join us in congratulating James Bradbourn, Dafen Central Planning Group Leader, who is celebrating 25 successful years at Owens Group!
James joined us when he was 16 years old as a school leaver. Here is what James had to say:
After leaving school I was told by my mother that I had to find a job so I went to every factory and business in Dafen (there were a lot then) and had no luck so my mother asked if Id tried Owens to which I said no I cant drive! Try anyway I was told. Mr Huw Owen greeted me and took me to his office for an interview, he asked what I fancied doing? I had seen the Traffic Control Department sign so I said I fancied that! He said start Monday and 25 years later here I am!
It all started in a two story portacabin, then moving to the purpose-built main building in Dafen before moving on to the traffic office where we are now. I've covered every planning desk along the way, managing the Dafen traffic office then working nights 4 on 4 off when my children were born. I've even had a stint managing the Bridgend traffic office in between.
Now I'm back at Dafen managing the Central Planning Team.
I've worked with some characters over the years, most notable being Howard Cooper who is sadly missed. I spent my early years being mentored by Howard, Eurof Owen and Ian Owen, but now work closely with Emyr Owen our Group Operations Manager, whom I have formed an excellent relationship with.
25 years done; I look forward to the next 25
We would like to thank James for his complete dedication and sheer hard work over the last 25 years. He is a loyal member of our colleagues, and always has the business best interest at the forefront of his mind.
Here's to a long and happy career with us at Owens Group

A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE TO ALL COLLEAGUES FROM IAN OWEN
A Christmas message from Ian Owen to all colleagues:
I hope this post finds you and your family in good health. It is hard to believe how fast this year has gone with 2022 on the horizon. It has been an incredibly challenging time for all of us and I have never been prouder to be part of the Owens Group. With the continued impact of COVID 19, Brexit, IR35, driver and fuel shortages, I would like to personally, along with my fellow directors, thank you all for the hard-work, dedication and commitment you have shown. Across all of our group businesses, I am overwhelmed with the positivity, willingness to work and support shown to each other, which is excellent to see and experience company wide.
A strong focus over the past 12 months has been continued investment in our technology, equipment and most importantly people, not to mention the development of our new head office in Bynea. Our ethos of putting profits back into the foundations of the business will ensure sustainable growth and development for many years to come. During the past year we have strengthened our business offering to existing and new customers. This was made possible with the acquisition of Celtic Couriers, back in the Spring, who are now an integrated and integral part of the Owens Group.
We have also seen the internal management structure of Owens change, with Huw making the decision to become our Chairman, I was honoured after 30 years with the business to be asked to take the role of Managing Director continuing to implement the values and culture whilst building a new leadership and management team. We have prioritised looking for new ways to engage staff and potential new colleagues, primarily with the introduction of a group wide benefit programme and package, which is still developing! With increased social media recruitment campaigns and HGV Driver Apprenticeships, we are certain will continue and expanding with the group.
Reflecting over the last year, it is astonishing what we have all achieved and is evident that it would not have been possible without every single one of you for your efforts, loyalty and continued support of the Owens Group. By working together and for each other, we can and will deliver another successful year. We look forward with the excitement, positivity and new development opportunities to our landmark 50th year celebrations, with the desire and passion to ensure we withstand many more.
I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a relaxing New Year ready for the new challenges ahead,
December 2021
SUPPORTING CHARITIES THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON
This Christmas season we are delighted to support the following charities each with a poignant place at the heart of the Group.
The Headlight Project:
Founded in memory of Russ Devereaux, the Headlight Project teaches children about mental health, providing support and help for adults, and work in collaboration with other organisations to deliver emotional resilience workshops and one to one counselling. The Headlight Project has a particular focus in supporting individuals and families who have been affected by suicide.
MIND:
Mind is a mental health charity, founded in 1946 as the National Association for Mental Health. Mind offers information and advice to people with mental health problems and lobbies government and local authorities on their behalf.
We are in a mental health crisis. So many of us are not ok. The pandemic has left millions of people with trauma. This is a crisis that is not going away. No-one should have to face a mental health crisis alone. MIND will ensure that everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets support and respect.
Wales Air Ambulance:
Wales Air Ambulance offers advanced critical care & covers the whole of Wales every single day. Each year their helicopters attend around 2,500 missions covering between the rural countryside to the bustling cities. WAA can be there for anyone in Wales within 20 minutes, bringing A&E directly to you. Funded by the people in Wales, they rely entirely on the publics support to help keep the helicopters flying, and are kept in the air through charitable donations and fundraising events. 8 Million is needed each year to operate the service.

THE TRIUMPHANT RETURN OF THE VOLVO!
The Group are thrilled to announce that we are to replace 90 per cent of the trucks operating out of Carrington site, Manchester with Volvo FH 460 Globetrotter tractor units.
The new vehicles will be delivered in three batches over the next nine months, as part of a landmark deal cementing our first Volvo order since 2005.
David Hill, Customer Solutions Manager at Thomas Hardie Commercials, secured the conquest deal after supplying a seed truck which was compared against equivalent models from two rival marques achieving an impressive 11.4 mpg average with our drivers.
Andy Williams, Head of Fleet & Compliance at Owens Group, says: We never buy a truck until the product has proven itself within our operation and with our drivers. Thomas Hardie Commercials had full faith in the FH to deliver, and it didnt disappoint coming out top on fuel and getting a great reception from our drivers in the process.
From day one, the whole team at Thomas Hardie demonstrated a strong desire to win our business and build a long-term relationship, investing a lot of time to tailor a truly premium spec new fleet. Its exciting to see the first new trucks entering service, and we are confident they will help us to attract and retain the very best drivers.
The new fleet comes with three comprehensive option packs adding an array of highly desirable features including full electronic air conditioning, cab parking heater, dimmable interior lighting, and a 33-litre under-bunk fridge-freezer.
The drivers will also benefit from twin armrests, additional dashboard storage, generous 245 litres of rear cab upper storage, bottle holders in the driving and living space, a fixed lower bunk with a wide middle section, ultra-comfy 40mm thick mattress topper and a luxury sleeper control panel.
For maximum efficiency, Volvos I-See predictive cruise control enables the truck to use map based topographical information to manage speed and gear changes in the most fuel-efficient way, helping to drive down fuel consumption.
Fleet uptime is also maximised thanks to a comprehensive Volvo Gold Contract for each truck, which includes all preventative maintenance and repairs with routine service work to be carried out at Thomas Hardie Commercials modern Trafford Park facility.
The new trucks are being vinyl wrapped in their striking livery by our in-house team and will join our fleet of approximately 500 vehicles and 850 trailers.
We look forward to building a long relationship with the Thomas Hardie team & for our drivers to enjoy the arrival of their new trucks.

CHARITY BIKE RIDE IN AID OF DEWI'S DREAMS
A big well done to our staff in Newport and Dafen who cycled 50 miles on Saturday in aid of Dewis Dreams.
Dewi is a little boy from Pontypridd, South Wales, diagnosed with Diaplegia Spacicity Cerebal Palsy, which affects his walking ability and balance.
Dewis family have been self-funding the much-needed surgeries that they have been fortunate to source in the USA. Unfortunately, the surgeries, treatment and rehab are ongoing to ensure the best possible outcome for Dewi.
We have followed Dewis journey since he was 3 years old and are always bowled over by his strength and courage!
The team set off from the Brecon Beacons at 8am, arriving 50 miles and some 8 hours later at Cardiff Bay!
With plenty of inclines but via breathtaking scenery, all arrived safely and made us at the Group very proud showing their determination in completing the ride and their promise to Dewis Dreams.
Congratulations to you all!
If you would like to donate please follow the link to the JustGiving page below:

Ian Owen responded It was with surprise but also great pride that I received this offer, but I wholeheartedly and immediately accepted and am exceptionally proud of the faith placed in me and the senior leadership team, I have big shoes to fill and will be leaning on my fathers knowledge and experience as you would expect. Owens Group acquires Celtic Couriers
Owens Group is pleased to announce the acquisition of the entire shareholding of Celtic Couriers Holdings Limited (CC) effective from Friday, 28 May 2021.
As a Group, we have achieved significant organic growth over recent years and this is the second acquisition in the last four years.
The CC business complements the existing express delivery and pallet network services provided by Owens and reflects the groups strategic objective to grow these elements of its activities in South Wales.
CC, which is based in Burry Port, Llanelli and operates the APC parcel network and Fortec pallet network in South West Wales, was established in 2005 and has been owned and run since 2015 by Gareth and Cindy Jenkins. CC will continue to be operated on a stand-alone basis within the Owens Group.
Huw Owen, Group Managing Director of Owens said
I am delighted that we have added Celtic Couriers to the Owens Group and I am pleased to welcome all of our new colleagues to the group. It is particularly pleasing to complete this acquisition in the heartland of our business and to further grow the Owens Group activities in the Llanelli area. I have always been impressed with the reputation that Celtic Couriers has in the market for customer service and I believe that Gareth and Cindy have grown the business based on the same family business values and principles as we have always had within Owens, focusing on excellent customer service.
Ian Owen, Group Operations Director of Owens added
I am looking forward to working with Gareth and Cindy and all of the staff at Celtic Couriers to continue to develop the business within the Owens Group. Both businesses have significant attributes which complement each other and provide the foundation to take the Celtic Couriers business to the next phase of its progression. This acquisition, together with the exceptional organic growth we have achieved in recent years, demonstrates our ambition to continue to grow the Owens group and our continued confidence in the markets we operate in.
Gareth Jenkins, Managing Director of CC said Operating only a small distance away from the heart of the Owens group we have had a birds eye view of their success over the years and have looked on with pride to witness the success of a local business throughout the UK. After initial conversations with Huw and Ian it became apparent very quickly both Companies share the same ethos with Customers and staff at the heart of everything we do. The success of CC is attributed to the staff and especially over the last year going above and beyond what was required especially when at times they put their own health at risk to ensure those important deliveries were completed. We are all excited to be joining an industry leading organisation and are looking forward to moving the business to the next level with the full backing of the Owens Group.

OUR COMMITMENT TO A GREENER FUTURE
Owens Group are committed to a greener future.
Here at the Group we are always casting a keen eye on our future, and the future of alternative fuelled vehicles within our fleet.
As Boris Johnson set out plans for the UK to lead the world in delivering a net zero emissions economy, he has most recently announced that from 2035, the UK will see a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans five years earlier than previously planned.
Reinforcing the Government's commitment to delivering on its net zero by 2050 target, he confirmed the intention of bringing forward the current date for phasing out the sale of petrol and diesel cars and vans.
Of course, we all want to tackle climate change, but it has to be done in a realistic and manageable way.
Changing the UKs car fleet to electric is a relatively simpler process. They are increasingly available, with improving range and infrastructure that will work for users. For vans this is less clear cut because payloads and duty cycles are much more demanding.
The changeover process for heavy goods vehicles is much more ambiguous.
Research into alternative fuels is already widespread. However, because of the nature of the road freight industry and the distances covered, there is still a very long way to go before an efficient, cost-effective alternative to diesel-powered trucks can be found.
But, is diesel an unbeatable champion?
Diesel is by far the most popular for truck fleets today, and its clear to see why. It is powerful, widely available, relatively affordable and offers great driving range. But that does not make it perfect.
The cost of diesel is volatile, as its influenced by changes in the price of crude oil. Swings in the price of oil is one of the main operational concerns for transport companies across the world, and so many are looking for alternatives.
Whilst we work hard behind the scenes to learn how alternative fueled vehicles will factor into our industry over the coming years, we are currently trialing in fleet a Tesla Model 3 an electric car with a lot to recommend!
As we know, hybrid and plug-in electric vehicles can help improve fuel economy, lower fuel costs, and reduce emissions.
The Tesla has proved to be
Spacious
The large battery means that anyone suffering from range anxiety will have much less to be anxious about when contemplating a longer journey
It has a EuroNCAP safety rating of 5-stars
Unlike older electric vehicles, it has the looks of a sleek saloon
The battery comes with an 8 year/100,000 mile warranty
The Tesla Supercharger network though you can use other chargers, there are currently 63 Tesla charging sites across the UK with over 500 chargers
Our commitment to the environment is a clear one we pledge to be committed to sustainability, and will engage with our suppliers in the move toward more sustainable business practices.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK 2021
Owens Group are celebrating Mental Health Awareness Week.
This year the theme is Nature and how connecting with the natural world can support good mental health.
Monday 10th May marked the launch of Mental Health Awareness Week, the UKs national week to raise awareness of mental health.
The week, which is hosted by the Mental Health Foundation, is in its 21st year and runs from 10-16 May.
This year, the theme for the week is Nature. Across the country, people will be celebrating the mental health benefits of being around nature in their local community in a range of digital and creative ways.
Mark Rowland Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation said:
Mental Health Awareness Week has grown to be one of the biggest awareness weeks in the UK. This year the theme is on nature and its central role for our mental health. Since the beginning of the pandemic, millions of us turned to nature to help us get through lockdowns and our research shows that good mental health depends on us being able to connect with nature in some way and its power in both prevention of and recovery from poor mental health.
During the week, we want to hear millions of peoples stories about how the natural world has supported their mental health.
We also want to highlight the huge disparities between who is and who isnt able to access nature. We want the week to explore how everyone across the UK can connect with nature and experience the mental health benefits wherever they live.
Some of the ways people can participate in Mental Health Awareness Week:
1: During Mental Health Awareness Week, why not try to make a habit each day of connecting to the nature in your local area? Stop to listen to the birdsong, smell the freshly cut grass, take care of a house plant, notice any trees, flowers or animals nearby. Take a moment to appreciate these connections.
2: Share images/videos/or just sound recordings of the nature on your doorstep (and how this made you feel) on social media using #ConnectWithNature and #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek
3: Use Mental Health Foundation resources in your family, school, workplace and community to join with thousands of people who will be finding new ways to connect with nature in their local environment.
For more information about this years Mental Health Awareness Week visit mentalhealth.org.uk/mhaw or join the conversation on social media using #ConnectWithNature and #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek

OWENS GROUP - SUPPORTING WALES AIR AMBULANCE
We are thrilled to announce that The Group has continued its support for the Wales Air Ambulance by donating 1,000 to the Charity.
The staff at our HQ are used to seeing the Dafen-based lifesaving helicopter fly over its premises but little did we know that one day it would be called out to help the son of one of our employees.
Three-year-old Cian, the son of Operations Group Leader Gareth Thomas, was rushed to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff after he fell seriously ill and needed specialist treatment.
Ian Owen, Owens Group Operations Director, said: As a local family business employing over 1,100 people, it was inevitable that one day one of our colleagues would require the fantastic support provided from the Wales Air Ambulance team.
Gareths son fell seriously ill and had to be rushed to Cardiff for specialist emergency treatment. Without the rapid response that the Wales Air Ambulance provided things could have been very different. Gareth and his family are pleased to say that Cian has made a full recovery and they would like to extend their sincere gratitude to every team member for the emergency service provided to him. Keep up the great work Wales Air Ambulance and fly safely.
This is not the first time that Owens has given its support to the Charity. Three years ago, we invested in wrapping a trailer with the Charitys branding, aiming to promote its lifesaving work. In striking green, red and white, the trailer remains an unmissable sight on the roads it travels daily across the UK.
Mark Stevens, Wales Air Ambulance Fundraising Manager, said: Thank you so much to Owens. Their ongoing support is incredible. The donation is much appreciated, especially as were now a 24/7 service. Every penny we make is vital to ensure that we can be there for people in need. To know that our service was there to help Cian and that he has now fully recovered is the greatest reward.

40 NEW DAF XF 480 6x2 TRACTORS
The Group have acquired a further 40 DAF XF 480 6x2 tractors with Super Space Cabs for our fleet.
The order follows 36 same-specification trucks delivered in 2019.
This latest DAF fleet, featuring DAFs FTG mid-lift axle configuration, will replace competitor models and boosts DAFs presence in the companys fleet to over 100 vehicles; in excess of 25% of 400 HGVs.
The outstanding levels of support from local DAF dealer, Watts Truck & Van in Swansea and Newport, has been a key factor in the decision to remain with the DAF marque.
The DAF XF has established itself in our fleet as a solid, reliable and very productive truck, it is also very popular with our drivers says our Commercial Director, Eurof Owen,
The DAF delivers on all key operational parameters, including fuel economy where we regularly see an excellent mpg return. We have also been able to achieve fantastic service levels for our customers due to the excellent up-time and this has contributed positively to the business growth year on year.
Where DAF really stands-out, however, is outstanding levels of support locally. Weve formed a true partnership with Watts Truck & Van, and I know, with Watts in support, our DAF fleet is fully utilised.
Were also taking this latest DAF fleet on outright purchase as we have great confidence in that the asset will command strong residual values. Again, Watts Truck & Van will play a key part in ensuring the fleet stays in tip-top condition while we extract maximum up-time from the trucks.
We look forward to their imminent arrival - a key investment, ensuring sustainable growth of our fleet.

MERRY CHRISTMAS & A HAPPY & HEALTHY NEW YEAR TO ALL
A message from Huw & Eurof Owen
Dear All We have come through a year like no other that has been filled with challenges the like that we as a business and individuals havent faced ever before.
The challenges are certainly not over and will continue in to 2021 but I know with the dedication, commitment and can-do attitude shown in 2020 we will continue to see the business operate to extremely high standards and meet and exceed our customers expectations.
This would not be possible without the contribution every person and every department has made. Thank you all for your support and contributing to the continued success of the Owens Group.
Christmas 2020 will be very different for all of us, not being able to see family and loved ones at this special time, whatever your plans are please try to relax, switch off and enjoy the time with those dear to you.
On behalf of all the Owens family we would like to wish you all and your families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Peaceful New Year.
A message from Ian Owen
As we near the end of 2020 it is time to reflect on what we have achieved as a team this year. By the time you read this, the final Christmas peak volume push will be behind us and hopefully we can all relax, take a deep breath and prepare to enjoy, as best we can, the festive period.
2020 has been a very unusual and different year, a year most of us would like to forget but the lasting memories for me will be the fantastic attitude TEAMOWENS has shown in keeping calm and carrying on. I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your support and dedication and positive contribution in your respective roles. TEAMOWENS, against all the odds, has continued to deliver on its promises to its customers and despite all the additional challenges thrown at us our KPIs have been exceptional. This has been recognised by many of our customers and is testament to what can be achieved when everyone works together as a TEAM. A special mention must go to our drivers, who travel to every corner of the UK and without whom nothing would get delivered. You have continued to operate in difficult circumstances whilst complying with numerous new guidelines and rules to keep yourself and our customers safe. Thank you for all for your dedication and for representing the Owens brand in such a positive way in all that you do. You should all be very proud of the part you play in making Owens Group the success it is today.
We are now focusing on 2021 and our aim is to continue to provide job security for all our colleagues at a time when many companies are closing, unfortunately resulting in high numbers of people being made redundant. We are also excited to be involved in many new opportunities and we hope to continue to secure even more new business for the Group.
We remain hopeful that 2021 will be a year that we can start to see things return to normal (the new normal) but for now it just remains for me to wish each and every one of you and your families a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Stay safe, stay healthy and enjoy the much-earned festive break.

GAS FUELLED VEHICLE TRIAL
Whilst Diesel has historically been fuelling the road transport industry for decades, in an attempt to improve our sustainability and improve costs, Owens Group have taken delivery of Iveco and Volvo gas powered vehicles.
The transport sector accounts for a significant proportion of emissions that have adverse effects on our climate and environment.
There are 10 prominent reasons why the Group chose to trail these vehicles within our rapidly growing fleet:
1: Improve carbon footprint
2: Reduce NOx and particulate mass emissions
3: Reduce noise pollution
4: Reduce fuel costs
5: Reduce total cost of ownership
6: Easy maintenance and expert repairs
7: Improve brand image and corporate sustainability
8: Safer fuelling, nontoxic and non-corrosive therefore safer for the environment
9: Ensures a competitive advantage in a highly competitive industry
10: Ensures growth in the UK economy in terms of reducing both our dependence on imported fossil fuels, and less scope of huge fluctuations in prices due to global politics
Our aim is to make progress toward areas of energy efficiency and alternative fuels, whilst also keeping a keen eye on reducing overall fuel costs incurred by the Group on an annual basis.
We all have a duty to improve our fuel efficiencies and minimise environmental impact lets make today the day we start making that change.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD MADE TO OUR MD!
Friday 22nd February 2019 was a night to remember where we attended the Swansea Bay Business Awards 2019, where the best businesses and entrepreneurs across the Swansea Bay city region were revealed!

The audience learned how he set up the business with just one lorry in 1970, before being joined by his brother Eurof, who is the firms commercial director.
Now our family-run business is firmly established as one of the UKs leading players in the UK transport and warehousing sector with a workforce of over 1000 heads & 550 trucks and vans. Last year we acquired Manchester-based BTS Haulage.
As a group, we now have a turnover in excess of 100million

CHARITY - LET'S GIVE BACK
Owens Group actively strive to help causes in our community on a daily basis.
Feedback and messages of thanks help us realise that these gifts of donations, be it small or large really do make a marked difference to Charities that work relentlessly day in day out to make changes to those in need.
This week alone we have seen correspondence from Shelter Cymru and Save the Children thanking us for monetary donations to help fight homelessness and families that are facing difficult times.
Most notably was a kind card from our partner Charity Follow your Dreams where we provided them with transport, moving stock donated by Aldi to their HQ for sorting, allowing them to raise an incredible 36,733.21 for the Charity!
Whilst we cannot help all causes, we really hope that what we offer makes a small difference in assisting worthwhile causes to make a change to precious lives.

M4 RELIEF ROAD - OPEN LETTER TO THE WELSH GOVERNMENT
Owens Group were amongst 90 businesses this week, calling for a decision to be made by the Welsh Government to press ahead with the much discussed 1.4bn M4 relief road around Newport
Ian Jarman of Owens Group told the BBC that a decision needed to be made for the good of road users and the freight industry.
He said: The Welsh Government have dragged their feet for a long time on this.
I believe they are stalling for time and don't want to build the relief road, they are looking for reasons not to build the relief road.
The decision has to be made, this is holding back the Welsh economy.
The Welsh Government have previously said that officials are analysing a report from a public inquiry into the planned relief road & a decision will be made when the advice has been prepared.
On January 31st Secretary of State for Wales, Alun Cairns, said: Businesses representing over 300,000 jobs are calling for this road to be built. When so many companies come together it highlights what a priority this is for the Welsh economy. With this in mind, the M4 relief road needs to be built as quickly as possible.
As the Secretary of State for Wales I have made sure that the money has been made available by the UK Government to build the M4 Relief Road. If this road is not built now, it will not be built until at least 2031.
This is because we would have to wait five years or more for a new First Minister, there would need to be a new inquiry that could last up to two years, and even if the decision was made then and the money happened to be available it would be a five-year build programme
If the M4 relief road is not built now, it will not be built until 2031 and the Welsh economy cannot cope with that challenge.
It remains to be seen how this will press ahead.
What we know for certain is that the road infrastructure around Newport is choked with idle traffic that is having an adverse effect on the Welsh economy, affecting our appeal from outside investment.

WHEN HISTORY WAS MADE - SEVERN BRIDGE TOLL REMOVAL
Monday 17th December 2018 was a historic day when Owens Group Driver, Craig Evans, made history in being selected to be the first member of the public to cross the Prince of Wales Bridge (Severn Bridges) and not pay a toll, when the bridge, which links South Wales with England, became toll free for the first time since it opened back in 1966.
Owens Group have tirelessly campaigned for the toll to be removed for over 8 years, directly at Westminster with MPs and through our proactive trade associations, the FTA and RHA.
The toll ended at a fee of 16.70 per HGV making a crossing back into Wales.
As a company, we make a staggering 31,000 crossings back into Wales using both bridges per year.
The savings are of course substantial to us as a company and will allow us to invest further in new greener technology.
The removal of the tolls will allow the Welsh economy to grow by over 100million pound per year, therefore as Welsh premier logistics provider, this can only have a positive outcome for us as a business.
We do however recognise that there will be some negative effects with the removal of the tolls.
The major concern is that the toll booths will no longer exist and act as a man made filter to hold back and slow the traffic on approach to the traffic 'hotspot' on the M4 around Newport.
Yesterday, we were able to highlight these concerns with the Secretary of State for Wales Mr Alun Cairns who confirmed that money has been made available from the Government in Westminster, and released to the Welsh Government for the building of the M4 relief road around Newport.
We are now calling on the new First Minister for Wales Mr Mark Drakeford, his Transport Secretary Ken Skates, and his Deputy Transport Minister Lee Waters of the Welsh Government to be bold and deliver a major piece of infrastructure that is so badly needed.
To use Craigs words an iconic moment
Thank you to Highways England staff for allowing us to be part of this momentous day. A day that history was made!

IT'S NATIONAL LORRY WEEK!
This week is National Lorry Week! Who doesn't #lovethelorry right?
With 89% of all food and agricultural products in the UK being transported by road, without the humble lorry the shop shelves would almost certainly be empty!

The primary aim of the National Lorry Week is to raise awareness of the fantastic job our lorry drivers are carrying out day in - day out and importantly also, to urge prospective drivers to consider HGV driving as a career that has an increasing appeal within the UK.
Government statistics show that by 2022, the industry needs to employ some 1.2 million individuals from drivers to warehouse operatives, to management, workshop technicians - the list is endless!
With depots placed as far as West Wales, across to the Midlands and North to Manchester, Owens Group have plenty of exciting opportunities for you. Contact our recruitment team today on 01554 754465!

LEANNE WOOD - PLAID LEADER - VISITS US TODAY AT HQ
Today, we welcomed Welsh Politician and the leader of Plaid Cymru - Leanne Wood to our HQ.
Leanne was eager to learn what challenges we face as a haulage company, with the majority of our trucks and business based in South Wales.
Huw and Eurof Owen spoke at length about the tough current economic climate, coupled with the effect of the weak Pound in an already weak economy; How do fluctuating and more importantly rising fuel prices affect us as a company, and how do we thus remain competitive whilst maintaining our standards in an extremely competitive and volitile market?
Topical today too is the shortage of HGV drivers in the UK. How can we encourage today's young people into the world of transport?
Leanne was encouraged by our plans for a recruitment drive this summer, where we invite all prospective HGV drivers to come and meet the team, learn about Owens Group and decide for themselves if their future lies with us!
Thank you for visiting us today, our door is always open.

ECONOMIC EFFECTS OF THE ADVERSE WEATHER EARLIER THIS YEAR
Last week, Owens Group welcomed the BBC News to our HQ in Llanelli, South Wales, where economic editor, Kamal Ahmed, reported about the the UK economy's weakest growth since 2012
The economy grew at its slowest rate since 2012 in the first quarter of the year, the Office for National Statistics has said
GDP growth was 0.1% down from 0.4% in the previous quarter
Although the ONS said the extreme weather had had a 'relatively small' impact on the fall in growth, we at Owens Group felt its full force, which cost the business 250,000 during that period where we saw the 'Beast from the East' coupled with 'Storm Emma' bring the country to a virtual halt
Operations Director Ian Owen spoke frankly about these costly effects on the business - costs that will not be recouped very easily
We look positively however to the remainder of 2018

Owens v The Beast from the East & Storm Emma
We have been in the news... all over the world
Friday 2nd March saw the country come to a virtual halt as the UK was hit with the worst storm that we have seen for some 50 years
One of our trucks unfortunately found himself stuck in snow and ice at Magor services, near Newport, South Wales. Luckily for him, the Royal Marines were on hand to save the day
A squad helped shunt the back end of the trailer until it built enough traction to move freely back on to the road
The staggering incident was captured by a member of the public on a video phone which was kindly sent to us at HQ to view
The video was rapidly shared through the many mediums of social media & was viral before the end of the night
We have had many requests for permission to share the footage.
It was shown on the BBC & SKY new channels, was shared via the Daily Mail, Daily Star, many local newspapers here to us in South Wales and also an ABC news correspondent in the States spoke of it
We also saw Bear Grylls retweet it an the footage being shown on the UniLad & Ladbible social pages to name but a few
We are now up to 5.7 million views on Facebook alone, with 81.8K shares & 47.3K likes
Group Operations Manager Emyr Owen said: The Beast from the East, couples with Storm Emma, have definitely put us at Owens Group to the test. Our drivers have encountered some drastic weather conditions over the last few days. They have remained extremely professional throughout but some did find themselves in some particularly snowy situations
This video is testament to the massive respect our armed forces deserve. Its times like these people do come together and support eachother as one
Without the Royal Marines at Magor Services yesterday, this driver would have faced many more hours stranded. They did an awesome job in getting us back moving
We would like to thank everyone involved in getting us back on wheels, allowing us to help keep the shelves stocked
